~Calm After the Storm~



Looking out at the dark sky

still clouded from the earlier storm,

I stand on the balcony

feeling the cool wind as it

swishes and dries my damp hair.

The wind chimes I have hanging up

ring softly in the light wind

bringing more peace to the earlier stormy night

with lightning flashing,

thunder booming,

and rain falling steady and heavy.

I close my eyes feeling the wind again

and the calmness it brings to me.

The sound of a car rolling across the pavement

has me open my eyes to see it rolling past;

headlights cutting through the darkened night.

Then the sound of my kitten behind me

at the screen door giving a soft whine

gets my attention.

“Hush little one,” I say.

“No you can't come out on the balcony.”

He gives another soft mew before turning away

to do whatever he does as a kitten.

I turn back to the dark skies once again

for another few moments

listening to the sounds of the night

and the wind chimes

before heading in to call it a night from the

calm after the storm.
